ARES International Training Scholarships to Study In Belgium, 2027-2028

The Academy of Research and Higher Education (ARES), an institution under the Belgian government, has opened applications for its 2027–2028 International Training Scholarships. Through this program, ARES is offering 200 fully funded scholarships for candidates wishing to pursue a Specialized Bachelor’s degree, a Specialized Master’s degree, or a Continuing Education program at one of the higher education institutions of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.

Recipients of the ARES scholarships will benefit from full coverage of tuition fees, a monthly allowance, health insurance, a round-trip international airfare, and, where applicable, visa fee reimbursement.

ARES is the federation of public higher education institutions within the Wallonia-Brussels Federation. It brings together more than 120 accredited higher education institutions, creating a rich and diverse academic environment that supports education, research, and personal development.

Benefits of the ARES International Training Scholarship 2027

For Specialized Bachelor’s and Specialized Master’s Programs

The ARES scholarship for a Specialized Bachelor’s or Specialized Master’s program includes the following benefits:

• International travel expenses in economy class on an IATA airline, with a maximum of one round trip per academic year.
• A monthly allowance of €1,150 per month for 12 months.
• Visa-related exceptional expenses, up to €200, included in the subsistence allowance. If the total amount exceeds €200, the additional costs will be reimbursed based on actual expenses upon submission of supporting documents.
• Inter-institution travel expenses of up to €250.
• Health insurance paid directly by ARES.
• Full coverage of tuition fees.

For Continuing Education Programs

The ARES scholarship for a continuing education program provides the following benefits:

• International travel expenses in economy class on an IATA airline, with a maximum of one round trip per academic year.
• Subsistence allowance for the duration of the training program.
• Additional international travel allowance (€200).
• Health insurance paid directly by ARES.

Scholarship Duration and Number of Awards

ARES scholarships are awarded for one academic year for both the Specialized Bachelor’s and Specialized Master’s programs. For Continuing Education, funding is granted for a period of up to six months.

For the 2027/2028 academic year, ARES will award a total of 103 International Training Scholarships, distributed as follows:

• 10 scholarships for the Specialized Bachelor’s program.
• 81 scholarships for the Specialized Master’s program.
• 12 scholarships for Continuing Education.

No Prior Admission Required

Applicants to the ARES International Training Scholarship Program do not need to obtain prior admission to an eligible Belgian university. Once selected, ARES will place students in the institution best suited to their chosen program among the prestigious higher education institutions within its network.

ARES Scholarship Eligibility Criteria 2027

To be eligible for an ARES International Training Scholarship, you must:

1. Be a permanent resident and employed in one of the 31 eligible countries (see the list below).
2. Hold a qualification equivalent to a second-cycle degree (Master’s degree) for Specialized Master’s and Continuing Education programs, or a first-cycle degree (Bachelor’s degree) for the Specialized Bachelor’s program.
3. Be living and/or working in your country of origin when submitting your application.
4. Be under 40 years old for the Specialized Bachelor’s and Specialized Master’s programs, and under 45 years old for Continuing Education programs.
5. Have at least two years of relevant professional experience.
6. Have a good command of written and spoken French.

Eligible Countries for ARES Scholarships

• Africa: South Africa, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Guinea, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, Niger, Uganda, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Tunisia, and Zimbabwe.
• South America and the Caribbean: Bolivia, Cuba, Ecuador, Haiti, Peru.
• Southeast Asia: Cambodia, Indonesia, Nepal, the Philippines, Vietnam.
• Asia: Palestine.

Selection Criteria

For each training program, candidates are evaluated by an academic selection committee based on the following eight criteria:

1. Academic background and performance.
2. Previous scholarship awards.
3. Professional experience.
4. Affiliation with a partner institution.
5. Potential to become an agent of change within their own society.
6. Nationality criteria.
7. Gender (the selection process aims to achieve gender balance in each program).
8. Personal and professional ability to transfer the knowledge and skills acquired during the scholarship.

How to Apply for the ARES International Training Scholarships

To apply for this scholarship in Belgium, follow these steps:

1. If you applied and created an account last year and it was validated by ARES, you may reuse your existing account. Otherwise, complete this account creation request form.
2. You will then receive a confirmation email allowing you to set your password and log in.
3. Once your account has been validated, log in to your personal space and access the application form by clicking the “Competitive Calls” tab. Start your application by clicking the “Application – International Training 2027–2028” button.

You may complete your application form over multiple sessions. Each time you return, you will find your application under the “My Tasks” section of the “Competitive Calls” tab on the GIRAF platform. However, once you click the “Submit My Application” button, your application is officially submitted to ARES and can no longer be modified.

ARES 2027 Application Timeline

• August 3, 2026: Applications open.
• September 4, 2026, at 4:00 PM (Belgian time, UTC+1): Deadline to request the creation or validation of new GIRAF accounts.
• September 18, 2026, at 12:00 PM (Belgian time, UTC+1): Deadline for submitting applications through the GIRAF platform.
• Between October 2026 and May 2027: Pre-selection and selection process.
• No later than June 2027: Successful, reserve-listed, and unsuccessful applicants will be notified of the results.
