International students can now apply for the doctoral scholarships program at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, Italy. Various PhD positions have been announced for the academic year 2024-2025.

The positions are open to international students in the fields of ancient languages and literatures, Italian language and literature, philosophy and logic, history, art history, archaeology, fundamental and applied mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology, sociology, political science, and computer science. Selection is based on the academic evaluation of candidates and interviews.

All students accepted into a doctoral program receive a scholarship.

The Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa (SNS) is a public Italian higher education institution with two campuses in Pisa and Florence. It has given Italy three Nobel Prizes and several Presidential Awards.

Its students are selected through a highly competitive entrance exam. The university ranks second among Italian universities in the «Times Higher Education 2022» ranking.

Benefits of the ENS Pisa Scholarships

All students admitted into a doctoral program receive a scholarship, including accommodation. Students are also entitled to free meals on campus.

The payment of tuition fees is not required and the regional tax for the right to study is reimbursed to students (60 euros per year). All students are entitled to additional funding for their research activities, even if conducted abroad.

Candidates will be entitled to a round-trip airfare reimbursement up to a maximum of 1000 euros.

Eligibility for the Scuola Normale Superiore Scholarships

The following candidates, regardless of nationality, can apply:

  • Those who have obtained a master’s degree in Italy or an equivalent degree abroad by October 31, 2024.
  • Those who were born after October 31, 1992.
  • Having no previous criminal charges resulting in a prison sentence of more than three years.
  • Have not been subject to disciplinary expulsion from their home institution.
  • Do not hold a PhD degree awarded by an Italian university.
  • Have never received a scholarship to pursue a doctoral research program in Italy;

Admission interviews can be conducted in Italian or English.

In the electronic application form, candidates must indicate the course — or courses — they intend to apply for.

You must attach the following documents in PDF format to the application:

  1. A copy of your passport.
  2. A curriculum vitae written in the Europass-CV format.
  3. A copy of the degree certificate.
  4. The master’s thesis.
  5. A copy of any publications, if any.
  6. The research project including a summary (in English).
Note: In the application form, for the “residence permit” section, select “indefinite,” the system will remove the dates. In the justification space, write something like “I am not yet enrolled”.
