Call for Applications: WASCAL Marine Sciences Scholarships

The Technical University of the Atlantic (UTA), in Ireland, has announced a call for applications for its Master’s Program in Climate Change and Marine Sciences Research (MRPCCMS) in collaboration with the West African Science Service Center on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL). This program, financially supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), offers 12 renewable study grants to accepted students from WASCAL member countries. Applications are open until June 15, 2024.

WASCAL scholarships and the Master’s program are exclusively reserved for students from WASCAL member countries. Applicants from other countries are not eligible for these scholarships or the study program. However, citizens of ECOWAS member countries have the opportunity to apply for the Master’s program as self-funded candidates.

The Master’s Program in Climate Change and Marine Sciences Research at the Technical University of the Atlantic is implemented in collaboration with the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research, the University of Kiel, and the Thünen Institute as German partner institutions, and with the Sea Institute (IMar) as a partner institution from Cape Verde. The master’s program aims to provide the scientific and academic skills necessary in climate, marine sciences, and management, both internationally and regionally in West Africa.

The Master’s Program in Climate Change and Marine Sciences Research consists of:

  1. Four months of language proficiency courses in English for French and Portuguese speakers at the University of Cape Coast, Ghana, and in French for English speakers at the University of Lomé, Togo.
  2. Three semesters of joint Master’s courses covering marine sciences, coastal and marine management, and climate change at the Technical University of the Atlantic (with national and international lecturers).
  3. Sea training with a local research vessel and a German international research vessel.
  4. Three weeks of scientific travel to German partner institutions.


The WASCAL scholarship includes:

  • A monthly allowance to cover living and housing expenses throughout the study period.
  • Full coverage of tuition fees.
  • A research fund.
  • Travel and transportation expenses.
  • Provision of a personal laptop for the entire program duration.

WASCAL scholarships are renewable, subject to certain conditions, for the entire planned program duration. A total of 12 scholarships will be awarded to the best candidate from each WASCAL member country.


Applicants for the Master’s Program in Climate Change and Marine Sciences Research must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be citizens of a WASCAL member country: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Gambia, or Togo; other ECOWAS member countries may be admitted as self-funded students subject to availability.
  2. Hold a bachelor’s degree in one of the following fields or any related field: Biological Sciences, Oceanography, Fisheries or Livestock Engineering, Geography, Atmospheric Sciences.
  3. Have at least an intermediate level of English proficiency.

Your application package must include the following documents. You must submit these documents in English, except for the copies of the university degree and academic transcript, which may be provided in their original language. You must also sign all documents.

  2. A copy of the identity card
  3. A copy of the passport
  4. A motivation letter (max. 2 pages)
  5. A copy of the university degree
  6. A copy of academic transcripts
  7. A copy of the English proficiency certificate or, alternatively, a statement indicating and justifying your self-assessment regarding English proficiency
  8. Evidence of professional experience in the relevant field for the course, if applicable
  9. Two recommendation letters from professors or researchers (associate professor or higher)
  10. A written commitment to pay a registration fee of 30 euros upon admission.
