- On track to graduate high school in the spring
- A competitive applicant to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
- Nominated by their high school, an affiliate program, or applying directly.
Canadian citizens :
Applicants from Canada must be:
- On track to graduate high school or CEGEP in the spring
- A competitive applicant to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
- Nominated by their high school, an affiliate program, or applying directly.
British citizens :
Applicants from the United Kingdom must meet the following criteria:
- On track to finish sixth form in the summer.
- A competitive applicant to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Out-of-State Applicants (Outside North Carolina) :
Applicants from outside North Carolina must meet the following criteria to apply to the Morehead-Cain Scholarship:
