Applications for the Alfred Werner master’s scholarships to study at one of the Swiss universities are now open for the academic year 2023-2024.
The Alfred Werner Foundation offers a maximum of ten scholarships of CHF 30,000, equivalent to 27,730 euros each. The Foundation targets international students in the top 10% of their undergraduate programs.

Benefits of Alfred Werner’s Scholarships
The Foundation grants scholarships to highly talented students to pursue Master of Science (MSc) in chemistry or biochemistry or pharmaceutical sciences or any related fields in a Swiss university or in one of the federal polytechnics.
The scholarship amount to CHF 30,000. Alfred Werner’s Master scholarships are supported by the Swiss chemical and pharmaceutical industry as well as by a multitude of private donors.
Eligibility
The following candidates, regardless of their nationality, can apply:
- Hold a bachelor’s degree in chemistry or biochemistry or pharmaceutical sciences or any related fields.
- Be ranked in the top 10% of their promotion in their home establishment.
Application procedure
Eligible applicants who wish to apply for the Alfred Werner Scholarships to study in Switzerland must click on one of the admissions links below of the desired institution and follow the instructions there to submit their application. You can apply in one or more institution.
There is NO specific form to apply for Alfred Werner scholarships. You must first apply for one of the master’s programs mentioned below. Once you have applied, you should contact the program manager (by email) and ask them to support your candidacy for the Alfred Werner scholarships.
Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) : 8 programs available. Available programs in chemistry at EPFL and Admission procedures |
Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ) :5 eligible programs |
University of Basel: 1 program available. |
University of Bern: only 1 program available. |
University of Fribourg : 3 programs. |
University of Geneva: 3 programs. |
University of Zurich : 1 program. |
The Foundation expects to receive nominations from the various institutions by March 31, 2023. As the university admission and selection process can take up to two months, applicants are encouraged to submit their applications as soon as possible.
Direct applications sent to the Foundation will not be taken into consideration.
The results will be announced at the end of April 2023.
