The DAAD Helmut Schmidt scholarships program is now open for applications for the academic year 2022-2023.
Helmut Schmidt offers students and graduates from developing countries the opportunity to obtain a Master’s scholarship in Germany in disciplines particularly relevant to the development of their home country.
The DAAD Helmut Schmidt Scholarships are designed to qualify future leaders in politics, law, economics, and administration. With this program, the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) aims to support good governance and civil society structures in selected partner countries and regions.
About Helmut Schmidt scholarships
LEVEL: Master.
DEADLINE: June 1ᵉʳ through July 31, 2022.
FUNDING: Fully funded (stipend + travel expenses + accommodation…).
TARGET GROUP: Developing countries.
HOST COUNTRY: Germany.
Amount and advantages of the scholarships
Applicants selected for the Helmut Schmidt Scholarship will have the following:
- Exemption from payment of tuition fees.
- Monthly stipend of €931.
- Health insurance coverage in Germany.
- Travel allowance.
- A research allowance.
- Rent allowances and family supplements, if applicable.
- German language course prior to arrival in Germany (six months)
In addition to the above benefits, Helmut Schmidt Fellows will also receive:
- Support and coaching services.
- Events and seminars.
- Close exchange with other international fellows.
Application period
The application period for the Helmut Schmidt scholarships runs from June 1ᵉʳ through July 31, 2022.
Eligibility for Helmut Schmidt Scholarships
The following are eligible for Helmut Schmidt grants:
- Applicants with an undergraduate degree (bachelor) obtained with above-average results (top third of promotion) within the last six years.
- Applicants who are citizens of or reside in a developing and emerging country for more than 15 months at the time of the application deadline.

Application procedures and required documents
The application procedure differs from master program to another. Please submit the application form to the master’s courses of your choice (no more than two), along with the required documents (see below). Scholarship applications are only accepted via the master’s courses.
The required application documents are:
- DAAD Application Form.
- A letter of motivation.
- A curriculum vitae.
- Copies of your higher education diplomas.
- Copy of your transcript and ranking.
- Certificates of work time for all listed internships, volunteer work and work experience.
- Recent language certificates (for German and/or English).
- A recently written letter of recommendation.
All applications must be submitted in English or German.
