South Korean automaker Hyundai Motor Group has been funding scholarships since 2026 to train African specialists in sustainable development at SOAS University of London. For the 2026–2027 academic year, seven scholarships are available: six for master’s programs and one for a PhD. The scheme is intended to support the development of a new generation of African experts and also includes networking events, seminars, and a Junior Internship program for master’s students.

For master’s students, the scholarship is worth £27,730. This amount is first applied toward tuition fees, and if those fees are lower than the award value, the remaining balance is paid to the recipient as a living allowance. For the PhD, the scholarship covers tuition fees for three years, as well as the writing-up year, and provides an annual stipend of £22,780, paid in installments.

Value of the Hyundai Motor Group Scholarships

The seven scholarships available for 2026–2027 are divided into six master’s scholarships and one doctoral scholarship.

  • For master’s programs, the total award is £27,730. It is used primarily to cover tuition fees. If tuition costs are lower than this amount, the remaining balance is paid to the recipient as an allowance.
  • For the PhD, the scholarship covers tuition fees for three years of doctoral study, including the writing-up year, and provides an annual stipend of £22,780 for 2026–2027.

In addition to funding, scholarship recipients are invited to take part in seminars, conferences, and networking events organized as part of the program. For master’s students, access to the Junior Internship program is also included.

Eligible Programs

The Hyundai Motor Group Scholarship is open to all one-year full-time master’s programs and all full-time doctoral research programs starting in 2026–2027. Applicants to programs in the College of Development, Economics and Finance and the College of Law, Anthropology and Politics are especially encouraged to apply. Part-time programs and two-year master’s degrees are not eligible.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Hyundai Motor Group scholarships at SOAS University of London, applicants must meet several requirements:

  • be a citizen of an African country and ordinarily resident in Africa;
  • be liable for overseas tuition fees;
  • apply for a program starting in 2026–2027. Applicants who are already enrolled are not eligible;
  • for master’s programs, hold or be expected to obtain a bachelor’s degree equivalent to a strong academic record. For the PhD, applicants must hold a master’s degree with a high academic standard. Applications slightly below the preferred academic profile may still be considered, though they will not be prioritized;
  • have submitted an application for admission to SOAS. It is not necessary to have received an offer at the time of applying for the scholarship, but an unconditional offer must be obtained before the selection panel meets;
  • meet the English language requirements of the chosen program. If admission is conditional on a language test, the applicant must provide the result within the required timeframe;
  • the scholarship does not cover pre-sessional English language courses.
