Applications for the Turkish Government Scholarships (Türkiye Scholarships) for the 2026–2027 academic year are officially open. Registration runs from January 10 to February 20, 2026.

The Turkish Government Scholarship program aims to provide full funding to international students of all nationalities who wish to pursue technical education, bachelor’s, master’s, PhD studies, or conduct research in Türkiye. In 2025, more than 120,000 students from 170 countries applied, and around 5,000 scholarships were awarded. Competition is therefore expected to be strong.

Türkiye’s growing appeal for international students

Türkiye is emerging as a major academic destination with 207 higher education institutions (including 129 public universities and 73 foundation universities). According to the latest figures, the number of international students rose from 48,000 in 2013 to 125,000 in 2018, reaching nearly 340,000 in 2024–2025. The government aims for 500,000 international students by 2028. The chart below illustrates this remarkable growth:

Such growth reflects the increasing attractiveness of Turkish programs, especially those taught in English (more than 600 programs), and the strong value for money. Outside Istanbul, an international student can live on €400 to €650 per month, including housing and daily expenses. Public dormitories cost between €24 and €38 per month, while renting an apartment typically ranges from €68 to €283 per month. Overall, the cost of living remains around 40% lower than the European average, a major advantage for students from developing countries.
