Applications for the 2027–2028 Chevening Scholarship have been open since 4 August 2026. Funded by the UK Government and its partners, the Chevening Scholarship gives selected candidates from around the world the opportunity to pursue a one-year Master’s degree in the United Kingdom at a university of their choice, provided the programme is eligible.

For this new cycle, the application deadline is 6 October 2026 at 11:00 UTC. Successful candidates will begin their Master’s in the UK in September or October 2027. The Chevening Scholarship covers tuition fees, a return flight, a monthly living allowance, and several costs related to settling in the UK.

What is the Chevening Scholarship?

The Chevening Scholarship is a UK Government international programme aimed at professionals and emerging leaders who want to pursue a Master’s degree in the United Kingdom. The programme is not restricted to any specific university or field of study. Applicants can select three eligible Master’s programmes in their application and must then apply for university admission separately.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the 2027–2028 Chevening Scholarship, you must meet all of the following requirements:

1. Be a citizen of a country or territory that participates in the Chevening programme.
2. Commit to returning to your home country, or your country of award, for at least two years after the scholarship ends.
3. Hold an undergraduate degree that qualifies you for admission to a UK Master’s programme. Your undergraduate studies must have been completed at least two years before the application deadline, even if your degree certificate has not yet been issued. The certificate will, however, need to be available by the time of your interview if you are shortlisted.
4. Have accumulated at least 2,800 hours of work experience after completing your undergraduate degree.
5. Receive an unconditional university offer. The Chevening application is separate from your university applications. You can submit your Chevening application without having already applied to your three chosen programmes, but it is strongly recommended to start the university application process early to meet each institution’s own deadlines.

Work Experience: What You Need to Know

The minimum work experience threshold is 2,800 hours, accumulated after your undergraduate degree. This is roughly equivalent to two years of full-time work at 35 hours per week, but experience gathered over a longer period or in a non-continuous way is equally valid. Eligible types of experience include:

• Full-time employment
• Part-time employment
• Voluntary work
• Paid or unpaid internships

You can combine up to fifteen separate employment periods to reach the required total. The calculation is done automatically through the online application portal. You do not need to resign from your current job to apply, but if you are selected, you will need to confirm that your employer can release you for a full year.

What Can Make You Ineligible

Certain circumstances will automatically disqualify an application, including:

• Holding British nationality or dual nationality that includes British citizenship, except in cases covered by Chevening’s stated exceptions;
• Being resident in the UK at the time of application, unless covered by Chevening’s stated exceptions;
• Having previously studied in the UK on a UK Government-funded scholarship, subject to the exceptions set out by Chevening;
• Being subject to conflict-of-interest rules relating to employment with the UK Government, the British Council, or a Chevening partner university.

What the Scholarship Covers

The Chevening Scholarship is fully funded under its standard terms. Award recipients can receive:

• Full tuition fees;
• A return economy-class flight on an approved route;
• An arrival allowance;
• Visa application fees;
• A departure allowance;
• A contribution of up to £75 for a tuberculosis test where one is required;
• A travel top-up allowance;
• A monthly living allowance to cover accommodation and day-to-day expenses.

The monthly stipend amount depends on whether your university is based in London or elsewhere in the UK, and rates are subject to annual review. Chevening does not publish a single fixed amount applicable to all cycles.

Which Master’s Programmes Are Eligible?

Chevening does not limit the scholarship to any particular discipline. Applicants can choose a programme that aligns with their background and career goals, as long as it meets the scheme’s requirements. Eligible programmes must be full-time, taught Master’s degrees lasting between nine and twelve months, starting in autumn. Distance learning, part-time programmes, and PhDs are not covered under the standard Chevening Scholarship.

How to Apply

All applications must be submitted online through the official Chevening system.

1. Step 1 – Check your eligibility: Before preparing your application, confirm your citizenship, undergraduate degree, 2,800 hours of work experience, previous UK study history, and your three Master’s choices.
2. Step 2 – Choose three Master’s programmes: Select three eligible programmes that are consistent with your professional goals. Remember that university applications are separate from the Chevening application — you must also apply directly to each institution.
3. Step 3 – Complete the Chevening application form.
4. Step 4 – Prepare references and documents: At the application stage, you will need to provide the contact details of two referees. If shortlisted for interview, you will also be required to upload two reference letters and your undergraduate degree certificate.

How to Strengthen Your Application

Chevening is highly competitive. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee an award.

1. Build a coherent professional project

Your three chosen programmes should have a clear connection to your background and career goals. Chevening assesses how your UK study fits into a broader, credible professional plan.

2. Use specific leadership examples

In your written responses, focus on concrete situations: a project you led, a problem you solved, a team you managed, or a measurable impact you achieved. Chevening evaluates leadership, influencing ability, and the capacity to build lasting professional relationships.

3. Work on your university applications in parallel

Do not wait for a Chevening decision before applying to universities. You need an unconditional offer from at least one of your three chosen programmes by July 2027.

4. Do not use AI to write your Chevening responses

This is a particularly important point. Chevening explicitly prohibits the use of artificial intelligence tools to generate application responses. All answers must be your own original work. Chevening states that it uses tools to detect fraud, plagiarism, and AI-generated content.

5. Check each university’s own requirements

The absence of a Chevening-specific English language requirement does not mean you are exempt from one. UK universities may impose their own admission conditions regarding language proficiency, academic qualifications, or other entry criteria.
