Applications for the prestigious Google PhD Fellowship Program for the year 2024 are now open. The Google PhD Fellowship program is an initiative designed to recognize and support outstanding graduate students who are conducting exceptional research in areas related to computer science and related disciplines. Recipients of this program will not need to leave their home country or their current university, as Google will fund their studies on-site. The value of the fellowship varies according to the location of study of the candidate. Apply before May 8, 2024.

Benefits of the Google PhD Fellowship

The Google 2024 PhD Fellowship includes the following benefits, depending on the place of study of the candidate, regardless of their nationality:

  • Australia and New Zealand : 1 year Fellowship of an amount of AUD $15K to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel.
  • East Asia : 1 year Fellowship of an amount of US $10K to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel
  • Africa: an allowance of 12,000 US dollars for a duration of three years.
  • Canada and United States of America: Full tuition fees (registration fees, health insurance, books) as well as an annual stipend for a duration of two years.
  • Europe : Up to 2 year Fellowship towards stipend, health care, social benefits, tuition and fees, conference travel and personal computing equipment. The bursary varies by country.
  • Latin America :students can receive up to a 2-year fellowship providing US $15K per year to cover stipends, research-related activities, and travel expenses, including overseas travel.
  • India : early-stage PhD students can receive up to a 4-year fellowship with US $50K to cover stipends and research-related activities, including travel and overseas expenses, while late-stage PhD students are eligible for a 1-year fellowship with US $10K to acknowledge research contributions and cover similar expenses, also including a Google Research Mentor.
  • Southeast Asia : students can obtain up to a 3-year fellowship offering US $10K per year for up to three years (or until graduation, whichever comes first) to cover stipends, research-related activities, and travel expenses, including overseas travel.

All fellows will have access to a Research Mentor from Google.

The Google PhD Fellowship is unrestricted. Fellows are free to spend the funds according to their needs and preferences.

The scholarship funds are directly transferred to the university of the fellow, which then distributes the stipend in the form of regular payments to the student. The university should not deduct any fees from the amount paid.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Google scholarship program, you must be an undergraduate or master’s student or an early-stage PhD student (at the beginning of your thesis) or a professional.

If you are an undergraduate, master’s student, or a professional:

  • Intend to apply for a PhD program in an eligible field at an institution of your choice in your home country or any other country (Canada, Europe…).
  • It is not mandatory to be already enrolled or to have applied for a doctoral program at the time of your application for the Google PhD Fellowship. However, if you are selected, the fellowship amount will only be awarded to you if you prove your enrollment in a PhD program.
  • Remain enrolled full-time in the PhD program throughout the duration of the scholarship.
  • For professionals, be employed/affiliated with a registered organization.

If you are already a doctoral student:

  • Remain enrolled full-time in the doctoral program throughout the duration of the scholarship.
  • Be an early-stage PhD student (in your first year of the PhD or at the beginning of your research).

Students can submit their application for the Google PhD Fellowship scholarships by following this link: https://research.google/outreach/phd-fellowship/.

You must choose the fellowship category corresponding to your place of study, not your nationality. For example, an African student studying at a university in Canada should apply for the Google PhD Fellowship category in Canada/United States.

The application period for the Google 2024 doctoral scholarship program is open from March 28, 2024, to May 8, 2024. Decisions will be communicated in July 2024.
