AAUW International Fellowships for Women and Transgenders

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) International Fellowships are now open for application.

International Fellowships are open to women, including people who identify as women, in all fields of study at an accredited institution of higher education or, for postdoctoral fellows, research.

The AAUW International Fellowships have been existing since 1917. The program provides support for women pursuing full-time graduate or postdoctoral study in the United States and who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

A limited number of awards are available for study outside the U.S. (excluding the applicant’s home country) to women who are members of Graduate Women International (see the list of GWI affiliates below). Both graduate and postgraduate studies at accredited U.S. institutions are supported.

AAUW has awarded over $135 million in fellowships and grants to more than 13,000 scholars and organizations in more than 150 countries. It is one of the largest scholarship programs for women in the world.

About the American Association of University Women Fellowships

LEVEL : Master, PhD and Postdoctoral.
DEADLINE : November 15, 2022.
ELIGIBLE FIELDS : All study fields.
OPEN TO : All women regardless of their nationalities.
FINANCING : $20.000— $50.000
COUNTRY OF STUDY : Mainly U.S.A. or country of choice (limited).

Fellowships Amount

The American Association of University Women International Fellowships amount is as fellow (annually) :

  • Master’s/first professional degree: $20,000.
  • Doctoral: $25,000.
  • Postdoctoral: $50,000.

Moreover, the AAUW International Fellowship funds are available for educational and living expenses, dependent child care and travel to professional meetings, conferences, or seminars.

Eligibility for the AAUW Fellowships

Besides being woman or  identifies as woman, eligible applicants must meet the following criteria :

  • Have citizenship in a country other than the U.S. or possession of a non-immigrant visa if residing in the U.S.
  • Have earned (in the U.S. or abroad) the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree by the application deadline.
  • Have applied by November 15, 2022, to an accredited institution of study for the period of the fellowship year and must indicate the name of the institution in the International Fellowship application. Acceptance is not required at the time of application, fellows must provide official confirmation from the institution with their award acceptance materials.
  • Be proficient in English and confirm proficiency
  • A good academic achievement and commitment to women and girls.

Applicants residing in their home country at the time of application, from developing/emerging countries, or from an underrepresented group in any region, will receive special consideration.

At the end of the program, recipients must return to their home countries.

Eligible countries for a fellowship outside US

All women from all nationalities are eligible to apply for an AAUW fellowships to study in the USA.

Meanwhile, citizens and permanent residents of the following countries are eligible, also, to apply for a fellowship to study outside the USA: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Bulgaria, Burkina Faso, Canada, Cyprus, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, El Salvador, Fiji, France, Ghana, Great Britain, Haiti, Hong Kong, Iceland, India, Ireland & Northern Ireland, Israel, Japan, Kenya, Korea, Lebanon, Lithuania, Mexico, Nepal, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Panama, Paraguay, Russia, Rwanda, Scotland, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Slovenia, Somalia, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Program schedule

Application for the American Association of University Women Fellowships are open from August 1, 2022 to November 15, 2022, by 11:59 p.m. PST. All applicants will be notified on April 15, 2023.

Each fellowship year starts from July first, and ends on June 30, of the next year.

To apply for the American Association of University Women Fellowships, start by clicking the “Apply” button below and create an account through their website. To be considered, complete all required components and fields.

During your application, you’ll be asked to upload the following list of documents :

  • Proof of highest degree or proof of current enrollment.
  • Transcripts.
  • Proof of English proficiency.
  • Proof of a doctorate or M.F.A. degree (postdoctoral applicants only).
