Imagine waking up one day, take your phone, and you notice the “You’ve got mail” notification. You open it up and holy moly you’ve been accepted to your dream Government scholarship program !

A scholarship where you don’t have to spend a penny on your education. Don’t you want to score that government scholarship ? Don’t you want to make this dream come true ?

Well, in this post, we’ll try to help you make that dream true. Governments scholarships are always special and getting on will change your life.

This list is devoted to programs that are open to all international students, whatever their nationalities. Country-specific programs are not listed here (generally, they are managed by embassies in cooperation with the local government).

Please be advised that due to the current pandemic situation, governments’ scholarship programs’ dates and eligibility are subject to change or cancellation at anytime. For example, New Zealand has shutdown its entire program for almost all the world except Pacific countries.

The order of mention of these governments’ scholarships programs is based on competitiveness. The higher the rank, the more competitive it’s. (We decicde the competitiveness based on the the number of aplicants.)

1. USA: FULBRIGHT AND HHH FELLOWSHIP

USA is one of the most expensive country in which to pursue higher education, but don’t let that put you off, as there are a lot of opportunities to gain funding for your studies in the USA.

The federal governement operates two well-known scholarships programs to study in the USA : The Fulbright (master’s degree) and the Hubert H. Humphrey. Both programs have different opening dates, depending on your original country.

2. CANADA: WELL… THEY ARE A LOT !

There are many governments scholarships programs in Canada. In fact, Canada has a very important number of scholarships sponsored by governments (provincial and federal).  These programs vary widely by country and many focus on specific degrees and disciplines.

3. AUSTRALIA: DAP AND RTP

Australia government offers three main scholarship programs for international students. They are : Australia Awards ProgramDestination Australia Program and the Research Training Program (RTP). Since the Australia Awards is a (very) region-specific program, we are not going to enlist it.

The Destination Australia Program (DAP) is a new mobility program for domestic and international students to study in regional Australia. Over 1000 scholarships will be available each year for master’s of PhD’s degree.

The Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarships are provided to support both domestic and international students undertaking postgraduate research degrees.

4. UNITED KINGDOM: CHEVENNING SCHOLARSHIPS

The United Kingdom government scholarships program is called “Chevenning“. Chevening Scholarships enable outstanding emerging leaders from all over the world to pursue one-year master’s degrees in the UK.

Application for 2022-2023 chevenning program will open, for Canada and most of other countries, 3 August.

US students are not eligible for this program. They have their own specific program : Marshall scholarships program.

5. CHINA: CSC SCHOLARSHIPS

Chinese Government Scholarship is a program managed by the Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC), aiming to develop outstanding international talent and improve the perception of China’s higher education.

The program is open for Bachelor, Master or doctoral (Ph.D.) degree courses in various disciplines taught in English & Chinese language in Chinese Universities. CSC Scholarships are offered in over 243 Chinese Universities every year.

The program is open all the year.

6. GERMANY: DAAD

Every year, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), through hundreds of scholarship programs, supports well over 100,000 German and international students and researchers around the glob.

DAAD scholarships usually consist of a monthly scholarship payment (€ 861 for graduates and € 1,200 for doctoral/PhD students) and a flat-rate travel allowance. Besides, in many cases, DAAD provides you with health, accident and personal liability insurance.

7. FRANCE: EIFFEL SCHOLARSHIPS

The Eiffel Excellence Scholarships Program was established by the French government to enable their higher education institutions to attract top foreign students to enroll in their masters and PhD programs.

The program is open to developing countries in its master’s level, but, to all countries including industrialized at PhD level.

This year’s call for application will be in : week of September 28.

8. SWITZERLAND: GOVERNMENT EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIPS

Swiss Federal Government operates one scholarship program : Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships.

The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships are aimed at young researchers from abroad who have completed a master’s degree or PhD and at foreign artists holding a bachelor’s degree.

The yearly program announcement will be early this august, while applications will be starting this September.

9. JAPAN: MEXT

Some 102,000 students from approximately 160 countries and regions around the world have studied in Japan as Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship students. There are four types of Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarships :

  •  Research Student Scholarship (PhD).
  • Undergraduate Student Scholarship (Master’s degree).
  • Specialized Training College Student Scholarship (Bachelor).
  •  Japanese Studies Scholarship.

10. BELGIUM: MASTER MIND

The Flemish Ministry of Education and Training awards scholarships for master’s programs in Flanders and Brussels to outstanding students from around the world. A Master Mind Scholarship includes a grant of €8 200 and a tuition fee waiver per academic year.

The opening date is usually January of each year.

11. NEW ZEALAND

The New Zealand Government offers four government managed scholarships. Three of them are region-specific, and the fourth one is for almost all international countries. This last one is called “New Zealand Scholarships for undergraduate and postgraduate study“. It’s a full tertiary scholarship for eligible international students to a full time study (Master and PhD).

The program starts usually in May of each year.

12. NETHERLANDS: HOLLAND AND ORANGE PROGRAMS

The Netherlands government operates two scholarships programs : The Holland Scholarship and the Orange Knowledge Program.

While the Holland program is meant for international students from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) who want to do their bachelor’s or master’s, the Orange Knowledge program is open to mid-career professionals in specific countries.

The Holland scholarship program will be available this November.

The Orange program has 3 rounds : Round 1 between February and March for courses, round 2 for short courses between May and June, and the last round for short courses too, between September and October.

13. SWEDEN: SI SCHOLARSHIP FOR GLOBAL PROFESSIONALS

The Swedish government operates one scholarship program named “SI : Swedish Institute Scholarship for Global Professionals”. The program is funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It offers a unique opportunity to develop both professionally and academically, experience Swedish society and culture, and build a long-lasting relationship with Sweden and other scholarship holders.

The call for the next academic year will be published during the fall.

14. ITALY: INVEST YOUR TALENT IN ITALY

Italy’s government scholarship “Invest Your Talent in Italy” offers an opportunity to develop skills through a range of Master’s and Postgraduate courses in English geared towards improving academic, technical and professional skills of applicants.

The program is usually opening between February and March of each year.

15. DENMARK

The Danish Government offers a number of scholarships to certain applicants in recognition of the important investment that overseas students make during their education. The scholarship consists of two parts:

  • A full tuition fee waiver,
  • And a grant, to help cover living costs.

The opening date varies from university to another.

There is no official website for the scholarship, but you can check some of its details in some Danish universities websites.

16. IRELAND : INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS

The government of Ireland International Scholarships are awarded to high caliber students from non-EEA countries to study in Ireland for a period of one year. Amounting to €10,000 for one study year, This fund is directed at supporting student costs and living expenses.

The scholarship may be for:

  • The final year of an undergraduate program;
  • One year of a taught master’s degree program or;
  • One year of a research program.

    1. Hey,

      Finnish government has no “direct” scholarship program. On the other hand, Finnish Universities offer a range of scholarship options for international students. They offer a range of scholarship options for those non-EU/EEA students who are required to pay tuition fees.

      Each university has its own scholarship system, so the kinds of scholarship available and any tuition fees you are expected to cover will depend on the institution and the degree program. You usually apply for the scholarship from the university at the same time when you apply for admission.
